A founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (COP) presents our second chamber music series concert as Orchestra-in-Residence at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in a concert entitled Beyond Bebop: Jazz, Classical, and the Third Stream. Enjoy a deeper look into the rich, fruitful, multifaceted dialogue between jazz and classical music and a genre-blurring exploration into new worlds of improvisation.
Hosted by WRTI's Bob Craig, experience the works of Schuller, Ravel, Schnyder, and world premieres by Music Director, Dirk Brossé, and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia/American Composer's Forum, Philadelphia Steven R. Gerber Composer in Residence, Adam Vidiksis. In the inaugural season of the residency, Vidiksis has been involved in a wide variety of projects related to COP's Improvisionaries season. "I was inspired by what the Annenberg Center represents." Vidiksis said. "They're a hub of modern performing arts, and I'm excited to have this work premiered in their hall."
In 1961, Gunther Schuller coined the term "Third Stream" to describe what he felt to be "a new genre of music located about halfway between jazz and classical music." This music was "not Jazz" and was "not Classical," and insisted there was no such thing as "Third Stream Jazz." The term came about as purists on both sides of the musical aisle objected to influence of one genre on another. "I've definitely felt the influence of the Third Stream genre," explained Vidiksis. He continued, "As I compose new works, these influences shape and color the piece into something completely new and exciting."
In a move away from the conventional chamber music recital format and toward the more intimate nature of chamber music concerts before the 20th century, audiences are invited to enjoy a drink and socialize before the performance. In lieu of program notes, WRTI's Bob Craig will guide listeners through the program, while musicians and composers from The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia share their thoughts and insights into each piece. The concert will conclude with a conversation between the artists, and an informal audience Q&A moderated by Mr. Craig.
Exploring improvisation is the theme of the Chamber Orchestra's 2017-2018 season entitled Improvisionaries. Throughout the Chamber Orchestra's season, audiences will experience an exploration of improvisation in music spanning from Baroque to Modern Jazz. From Bach to Brubeck, each concert preserves and celebrates time honored traditions of classical music while presenting it as a living, evolving art form.
