The Centre Theater’s Second Annual Independent Voices Festival Opens in Norristown

The Centre Theater begins is 20 day performance festival with a weekend of comedy, music and drama. in its fourth floor theater

The Independent Voices Festival spotlights performers who deserve an encore performance or who what to bring new work to the stage. The Centre Theater also offers opportunities for new performers to explore professional productions. The month long festival highlights more than three premieres and performances from many genres' including theatre, movement, music, and puppetry.

This week's programming features Casual World/Intimate Heart which is a one-woman autobiographical piece about a girl who learns to express herself through music. This piece combines spoken word poetry, original music, and touching monologues spoken from the heart. The show runs around 75 minutes with no intermission. it is a collaborative piece that was conceived and performed by Anj Granieri and developed with Allison Emmerich . ON Sunday The Chestnut Street Singers bring their unique musical style to the centre. Based in Center City Philadelphia, Chestnut Street Singers is a cooperative chamber choir committed to active engagement with musical traditions and their evolution. We seek to illuminate commonalities linking the early Renaissance to contemporary practices, integrating canonical repertoire with lesser-known works and augmenting our musicality with creative and irreverent programming. They perform on Jan 9 at 3pm.

Mayor Karen is Nora Algeo, Nick Gillette, Jefferson Haynes, Michael Hochmann, Lorna Howley, Alan Kaufmann, Rachel Semigran, Michael Tomasetti, and Becca Trabin. Directed by Nathan Edmondson. The group is the house company of Philly Improv Theatre and an active participant in the Philly comedy scene. They are a new groups and their invite to Independent Voivces is a result of the Centre Theater's desire to highlight new talent in the region. An Hour of Improvisation, comedy and fun. This is a BYOB this event on Jan 7 at 8pm

The Independent Voices Festival runs January 7 and running through February 6.

The Centre Theater has been involved with the project to develop an arts district in Norristown. The Theatre has been the anchor for the arts in Norristown for more than15 years. The theater is located at 208 DeKalb Street one block from the Norristown Transit Station, the street that has become "Norristown Arts Hill". The facility is undergoing a massive renovation including the development of an new larger theatrical space.

The Centre Theater is in the Montgomery County Cultural Center at 208 DeKalb Street in Norristown. It is easily reached via routes 202, I-76, I-476 and Ridge Pike. There is plenty of free parking and the theater is one block from Septa's Norristown Transit Center on the Manayunk/Norristown line.
