The Crowded House, a new children's opera, will be premiered at The Barnstormers theater starting Friday April 9, 2010.

Based on an old folk tale, a poor family complains that their house is too crowded. The village wisewoman tells them to bring in their goat, their chickens and their donkey; when she finally says to let them out, the family is amazed at how much room they have.

Local composer Michael Dutka brings the story into the 21st century with a scat-singing wisewoman, a Gilbert & Sullivan-type patter song on how to become a Good Witch, a children's chorus, and a troupe of dancing animals.

The Crowded House is directed by Susan Wilkinson-Wood, producer-director of the Stagestormers Children's Theater, with Florrie Marks, maestra of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County as music director and conductor. Noted set designer Bruce Warren is the producer with Theresa Rose Murphy as choreographer.

The lead role of Angeline is double-cast between professional sopranos Sarah Joanne Davis and Toni Marie Palmertree, with Colin Dahms, Gabor Kari, Kara McGee and Theresa Swartz as the poor family. Tickets $10 for adults, $8 for youth (17 and under) and seniors.

The Barnstormers is located at 402 Tome Street, Ridley Park, PA 19078. Performances are scheduled for April 9, 10, 11*, 16, 17 and 18*. Performance times are Friday and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm.
