Temple Theaters to Present Peter Weiss's Masterpiece MARAT/SADE

Temple Theaters presents The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, commonly called Marat/Sade by Peter Weiss. Directed by Donna Snow, this twentieth-century masterpiece is a deep examination of human suffering and class struggle that still resonates today. With twenty-three graduate and undergraduate actors and a score of lively music, the drama will run November 9 - 19 in Temple University's intimate Randall Theater.

With a cast of sociopaths and schizophrenics, Marat/Sade is a parade of insanity, art and chaos in the wake of the French revolution. The drama imagines a historic possibility; using the known fact that the Marquis de Sade (Guillermo Alonso), a resident of the Asylum of Charenton in earlier 1800s, staged plays with the inmates, Weiss constructs a play-within-a-play about the murder of Jean-Paul Marat (Jose R. Mangual) by Charlotte Corday (Nicole Souza). At the intersection of theatricality and insanity, Marat/Sade remains a modern meditation on revolution and politics.

Director Donna Snow is a longtime faculty member and former chair of Department of Theater. In addition to appearing in a few productions (Oklahoma!, Anything Goes), Snow has also directed for Temple Theaters, most recently 2012's Top Girls. Snow is also a Master of Fitzmaurice Voicework and the head of Undergraduate Acting at Temple University.

Scenic designer Fred M. Duer, chair of the Department of Theater, has credits across the nation including The Old Globe Theatre, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Illinois Shakespeare Festival and more. He also designed the set for Temple Theaters' acclaimed production of Hair. Lighting designer Nick Ligon is a third-year MFA candidate, whose Temple Theaters' credits include Hairspray, A Free Man of Color, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Godspell. Costume designer Elizabeth Ennis is a second-year graduate student and designer for last spring's Godspell.

Upcoming, Temple Theaters hosts Shakespeare Projects, abridged versions of Julius Caesar and Measure for Measure, showcasing the unique vision of MFA Directing candidates Amy Blumberg and Noah Herman, respectively, December 2 - 10 in Randall Theater. The spring semester begins with the world premiere of Reggie Hoops by Kristoffer Diaz, the inaugural presentation of the Department of Theater's Playwright Residency Program.
