The 2009 summer season at Totem Pole takes a delightful turn in its fifth offering. The best selling novel, Tuesdays With Morrie, takes to the stage at The Playhouse July 28th. The play is based on the true-life experiences of acclaimed author and sports columnist, Mitch Albom's weekly visits to his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz. Schwartz taught Albom at Brandeis University and reached national acclaim when Ted Koppel, from ABC's "Nightline," presented ongoing segments about Schwartz and his battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Totem Pole favorites, Richert Easley and Artistic Director, Ray Ficca, star in this illuminating play that serves as a great lesson on life, living, aging, family, and commitment. "Tuesday's With Morrie is primarily about the Mitch Albom character and what he learns," says Ficca. The autobiographical story begins with Albom at the height of his success as a sports-writer and TV personality. In achieving that success, the Albom character has lost direction on the more important things in life. He is consumed with his job and success, and has abandoned the ideals he once had in his youth.
"I was shocked to learn that so many people have embraced the novel and have said that it changed their lives," says Ficca. "The lessons and messages contained transcend all ages and generations." The NY Post stated, "I was unprepared for how moving and powerful Tuesdays With Morrie turned out to be...On this ground, the flowers of humanity grow." Tuesdays With Morrie opens July 28th and runs through August 9 and is sponsored by Orrstown Bank.
