The Wedding Singer, Broadway's recent musical salute to the 1980s is opening at York Little Theatre on July 9. Based on the 1998 film of the same title, the 2006 musical was Tony-nominated for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.

The romantic-comedy storyline centers on New Jersey's favorite wedding singer, Robbie Hart, a would-be rock star who fronts a band that plays wedding receptions. He is in love with love and the notion of happily ever after until he is left standing at the altar by his fiancée. His only hope of salvation is with Julia, a sweet, clumsy waitress who already has a boyfriend.
The Wedding Singer is directed by YLT Artistic Director Eric Bradley Long. "The show is as charming as Drew Barrymore is in the move," says Long. "It's good-natured, honest and funny. It's a nice summer show."

The cast features local actors Adam Dienner, Cat Howard, Chris Ausherman, Tatiana Dalton, Lee Howard, Sean McComas, Andrew Matseur and Dara Rees. "The comedy, energy and charisma of the cast make this show wonderful," says Long. "This is a funny, fast-moving, energetic show and it's the cast that makes that work."
The show differs from the movie and Long says, "even if you didn't like the movie, you may still like the show." For example, the movie used popular 1980s music for most of the songs, but the show features original 80's-style music. The only songs in both the movie and the show are Adam Sandler's original pieces, "Somebody Kill Me," and "Grow Old With Me." "Our Robbie, like Adam Sandler, sings and plays the guitar himself for those songs," explains Long.

The Wedding Singer features a rock-band pit lead by Musical Director Joe Reed. Choreography is by Cat Howard and Kimberly Smith, costumes are designed by YLT Costume Coordinator Patee Pizzirusso, and the set is by YLT Technical Director Bob McCleary.

Performances are on July 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 at 8 p.m.; and on July 11, 18 and 25 at 3 p.m. The Wedding Singer is part of the Columbia Gas Season. Tickets are $10 -20. More information and tickets are available by calling the box office at 717-854-5715, 11 - 6, Monday through Friday, or visiting www.ylt.org.
