Steele Spring Stage Rights, the licensing company that represents The Marvelous Wonderettes, has just acquired the theatrical performance rights to the hit off-Broadway musical comedy Gigantic, featuring a book by Randy Blair & Tim Drucker, music by Matthew roi Berger, and lyrics by Randy Blair. Prior to being acquired by Stage Rights, Gigantic kicked off the 2015-16 season at the Vineyard Theatre in New York City, and won Best of Fest at the New York Musical Festival under the name Fat Camp.
Gigantic follows Robert as he's shipped off to Camp Overton, the wooded hellhole where teens abandon their dreams of Ho Hos and Twinkies in a grueling effort to lose weight. When co-counselors Mike and Sandy tighten the reigns on Butterfinger contraband, Robert devises the ultimate plan to get kicked out of camp, but a hot make-out session with a buxom beauty may sway his bad-boy ways. As the counselors prepare for a federal inspection that threatens to shut down Camp Overton forever, the misfit campers must decide whether to go big (or go home) in this irreverent musical comedy with a plus-size heart.
Gigantic premiered in 2009 at the New York Musical Festival before having limited engagements off-Broadway in 2012 and 2015. Max Wilcox and Ryann Redmond starred in the latest off-Broadway production, with The New Yorker commending their "gutsy" performances under the direction of Scott Schwartz. The New York Post calls the score a "bubbly throwback to '80s pop and rock" while the Times Square Chronicles believes this musical will "appeal to a lot of people, especially teens that are struggling with who they are." Blair states in an interview with Culturadar that he wanted to create a musical about outcast teenagers who are "forced to deal with their issues in a place they can't escape from," as well as write compelling lead characters for actors who are normally cast in side roles. Both Blair and Drucker watched summer camp movies for inspiration, and ultimately created a comedic tone that salutes the works of John Hughes, Judd Apatow, and Joss Whedon.
Stage Rights is thrilled to add this innovative musical comedy to its ever-expanding catalog.
