The recipient of four Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, Lost in Yonkers is a coming-of-age story with universal appeal. Neil Simon tells the tale of two brothers who are left with their immigrant grandmother and conspicuously childlike aunt in Yonkers, New York. This is the quintessential tale of family relations presented through moments both serious and comedic in what has been hailed by many as Simon's crowning contribution to the canon of American Theatre.
Directed by longtime Plays & Players board member Elizabeth Chomentowski, Lost in Yonkers uses the backdrop of World War II era America to highlight the importance of family and faith in those you care about. "People have often referred to the family in Yonkers as ‘dysfunctional,'" said Chomentowski, "but they aren't. These characters show how - for good or ill - family members' affect one another. The grandmother is a formidable woman, but her strength - and at times her severity - helps her children understand that you don't take from anyone else for your own survival."
Chomentowski has been performing in and directing at Plays & Players Theatre for nearly forty-five years. Her directorial debut at P&P was in the late 1960s with And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little. She is currently on Plays & Players Board of Directors.
Lost in Yonkers stars Angela Carolfi (Bella), Catherine Moroney (Gert), Gavin Becker (Arty), Helen McCrane (Grandma), Jim Ludovici (Eddie), Jordan Mottram (Jay ) and Ryan Ruggles (Louie).
