Philadelphia -- For the next two weekends the Pennsylvania Ballet will be staging the classic romantic ballet Giselle at the Academy of Music. Considered a masterwork and originally performed in 1841, the visually stunning and emotionally moving tale is the company's first performance of 2019.
Regarding the ballet, the company's website says: "There are many great stories of heartbreak and redemption, but none are quite as beautiful as Giselle. This season, we premiere Angel Corella's restaging of the story of a young woman whose love triumphs over vengeance and lasts even beyond death. One of ballet's oldest and most continually-performed works, Giselle is a hauntingly romantic work that continues to move audiences."
Based on the final dress rehearsal Thursday, the characterization of the ballet as a haunting and romantic classic is might be undersold.
