The Wayne resident chose musical theatre pieces each week which included songs from popular shows like "Les Miserables" to lesser known titles such as those from "Floyd Collins". The focused, dramatic performances received appreciative applause and high marks from the judges.
He has aspirations to study musical theatre in college, but has not yet decided on the university of his choice. With his ability, he may have several choices to make as talent scouts for the finest music education programs in the nation will surely be knocking on his door.
Jesse Cline, Media Theatre's Artistic Director and the only constant judge throughout the contest, told Hicks during the finals, "Your voice is a wonderful instrument. The ability you have to act the lyrics as well as sing them is incredible."
It was probably The Media Theatre's most diverse group ever in its annual summer competition, previously titled "Delco Idol". Songs ranged from Broadway's "The Color Purple" to
Michael Buble hits and even classic pop. The competitors came from each of the surrounding counties near Media, including several from Philadelphia's University of the Arts.
It was one of those UArts students who received second place and a cash prize of $500. She is DeShana Wooden, 20, of Philadelphia, who brought the house down near the end of the summer's contest with "As Long As He Needs Me" from the classic musical "Oliver!"
Three singers received $100 each for making it to the Top Five: Third place went to Asia DeShields, 16, of Newark, Delaware with fourth place going to 18 year old Alex Larsen of Media. Danielle Lachall, 22, of Aston walked away proudly with fifth place. She had been a contestant in previous years, but never made it to the finals. "I did it tonight," she said, "I was on pitch!"
