August Wilson, Lorraine Hansberry, Langston Hughes. These were the names that easily rolled off of the tongue when you thought of the African-American playwright. However, now in the Tyler Perry generation, you struggle to find African-americans who have knowledge of those playwrights let alone more recent ones such as Lynn Nottage and Anna Deavere-Smith. Fortunately, the times are a-changing.

On September 20, 2010 the Philly Urban Theatre Festival descends on Philadelphia. Thirteen black playwrights will get their opportunity to take a step into history. The Philly Urban Theatre Festival was the concept of playwright and actor Kash Goins. Kash Goins, a two- time NYC Downtown Urban Theatre Festival winner, saw a need to develop a "fertile ground for this underserved and grossly unrepresented, yet talented group of artists." Many different styles and many different topics can be seen at the PUTF. Styles such as choreopoems, spoken word and satires. Topics such as HIV/AIDS, love, betrayal and politics. Many different voices. Many different experiences.

The Philadelphia Urban Theatre Festival runs from September 20- October 10, 2010 at the Adrienne Theatre, 2030 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. The featured voices for the PUTF are: Kash Goins, Tiffany Joyner, Race Brown, Briana Cannon, Donja R. Love, Shenille Melton, Cheril N. Clarke, Jamila Capitman, Heather Thomas, Kareem Rogers, Lee Colston, Karen Waller- Martin(Director), Tiffany Wilson, and Andre N. Jones. Let's welcome this new generation of Black Voices!
