The Philly POPS and the University of the Arts announced today a joint partnership to create The Philly POPS/UARTS High School All-Star Big Band. This band will be comprised of students selected for their demonstrated excellence in jazz performance. Applications are now being accepted and select students will be invited to audition. The HS All-Star Big Band will consider students in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia suburbs, New Jersey, and the Baltimore and Washington DC areas for membership.
This program further extends the POPS in Schools program, which currently provides supplemental music instruction to 2500 students in the School District of Philadelphia. Additionally, it expands the University's outreach and educational mission - providing unique opportunities in jazz and contemporary music education and performance. Among other performances, the HS All-Star Big Band will participate in Philadelphia's annual All-City Jazz Festival and will play alongside The Philly POPS BIG Band - a group of renowned professional musicians. Matt Gallagher, an associate professor at the University of the Arts, will serve as music director. Students in the ensemble will work with UArts teaching artists and will attend masterclasses to further grow their skills. The HS All-Star Big Band will consist of five saxophones, five trumpets, five trombones, a guitar, a piano, a bass, drums and percussion. Student performers of other instruments will also be invited to apply.

About The University of the Arts
Founded in 1876, the University of the Arts is one of the nation's only universities dedicated solely to educating students in the visual and performing arts, design and writing. It is the only art school in the U.S. that allows its students to collaborate across traditional lines-painters can minor in piano, dancers can study film, guitarists can take classes in screenwriting. A rigorous and well-rounded curriculum prepares its 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students to be the innovative leaders of tomorrow, whether in a specific artistic discipline or by applying their creative education to virtually any career. UArts' campus is located in the heart of Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, in one of the nation's most culturally vibrant cities.
The UArts School of Music is dedicated to the preparation and training of musicians for a career in music performance, composition and music education. The student's growth as a musician is the primary goal of the program. Additionally, UArts' Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology program provides students with the broad skill sets and entrepreneurial spirit essential to creating their own specific career path within the music industry.
Prior to this partnership, the UArts High School All Star Jazz Band had been a part of the School of Music's educational outreach for over 20 years. This new alliance with The Philly POPS dramatically enhances the outreach and educational support for music students throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond. Many of the alumni from the original All-Star band have continued as students at the University of the Arts and other top university music schools, and many have become highly successful professional performers and educators.
