Maestro Louis Scaglione, President and Music Director of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization (PYO), today announced a free concert from 70 children in PYO's Tune Up Philly at the People For People Charter School. The students will perform musical selections on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia at 2:00 p.m.
"The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization was the first in the region to create an El Sistema inspired program because we believe music education is a vehicle for social change," said Delia Raab-Snyder, Director of PYO's Tune Up Philly. "We are thrilled to offer our second concert in the beautiful Greater Exodus Baptist Church and invite the community and city to attend this free concert to support our kids."
PYO's Tune Up Philly is inspired by Venezuela's El Sistema and is designed to nurture urban, economically disadvantaged children through weekday, out-of-school hours, classical musical instruction. The program commenced in September 2010 at St. Francis De Sales School in southwest Philadelphia, and now, in its second year, is operating at the People for People Charter School in North Philadelphia. Instructed by ten, professional, teachers and musicians, the students in PYO's Tune Up Philly train five days a week during the school year, with concentrations in woodwind, brass, strings, choral and general music education.
The Greater Exodus Baptist Church is located at 704 N. Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA. For more information, please visit the PYO website.
