The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is presenting Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol as its holiday offering this year. Audiences will still scowl at Scrooge's cold-hearted stinginess, thrill at the appearance of the famous ghosts and be warmed by Tiny Tim's famous blessing.

But it's not your average re-telling. Director Jennifer Wolfe (Chester) says, "I was attracted to this particular version of A Christmas Carol because it is expansive and joyful and embraces the language and spirit of Dickens." She goes on to say she hopes audiences "leave the theater with a lighter heart, and the certain knowledge that we all journey together through this life."

The production has some fun historical aspects to it as well - which is appropriate, given that the theater is celebrating its centennial season. The last time PCS presented A Christmas Carol was in 1992, with George Mulford directing and long-time participant Orville French playing Ebenezer Scrooge. This time around, Mulford is taking on the Scrooge role.

Wolfe has enlisted the help of Music Director Paul Kerrigan of Phoenixville and a large cast of all ages to bring Dickens' best-known story to life. George Mulford (Scrooge) is from Swarthmore. He's accompanied by: James Carroll, Jack McDonnell and Colleen C. Sheldon of Springfield; Michael Murphy of Secane, NJ; Edward Emmi and Tim Oskin of Wilmington, DE; Jillian Haas of Morton; Jillian A. Cassidy of Pennsburg; Sara Prendergast of Philadelphia, Elizabeth Lunardi of Drexel Hill, Marielle Buxbaum of Lansdowne and many others.

A Christmas Carol runs November 26-28, December 2-5, 9-12 and 16-19. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sunday matinées are at 2pm. The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is located minutes from the Blue Route and I-95 at on Fairview Road, just off Route 320 (Chester Road) in Swarthmore.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students (18 and under or college students with ID) and $14 for seniors.
