Known for their song cycle cabarets, Nightcap Cabaret is proud to present their first full length musical in concert on April 24th and 25th at L'Etage Cabaret with Salman and Cunningham's Next Thing You Know.
Next Thing You Know is the story of four New Yorkers as they laugh, love and drink their way through the big questions that face all young dreamers who wake up in the city that never sleeps. Does marrying a really nice guy mean you're settling down or just settling? Does taking a nine-to-five equal giving up or growing up? Does a decade in the city break you down or break you in?
Featuring: Allison Boyle, Luke Bradt, Katie Elizabeth Hughes, Tristan Horan
Directed by Nightcap's Producing Director, Anne Marie Scalies gathers a unique blend of young artists to tackle this humorous text and complex score musically directed by Daniel K. Williams and played by Grant Uhle.
"Ryan Cunningham is a friend whose musicals I have an infinity for", Scalies says. "I recently directed Salzman and Cunningham's I Love You Because with a theatre out in the suburbs and it had a profound effect on me. I am extremely grateful to be able to introduce Next Thing You Know to the Philly crowd." Do you remember your 20s? A true decade of growing pains. Scalies recalls "My 20s is chock full of change. Graduating college, searching for a home in the theatre world, realizing the challenge of paying bills on an artist's wage and changing career paths." Scalies, now 41, says, "If I could tell my 20-something-self one thing it would be to challenge yourself and create your own dreams. Only live up to your own expectations and no one else's."
Artistic Director, Nate Golden partnered with Scalies a few years ago with an endeavor to give emerging artists a platform to share their craft and expose their talent with a new audience through Nightcap Cabaret. After 20 or so cabarets that they and their team have produced, it seemed like a no-brainer to add to the effect by introducing newer pieces to the community as well. They first tackled improvisational comedy with Philly's youngest but oldest comedy duo with Ruth & Estelle's Master Class as well as taking their annual Christmas act, Jingle Belles into sketch comedy territory. Next Thing You Know is their first fully scripted musical that they will present with "script in hand" backed by a small orchestra of keyboard, guitar, and violin.
