Philadelphia's Inis Nua Theatre Company will present a staged reading of High Noon at Grays Ferry, Twilight on Falls Road by Tom Reing on January 27. Originally developed with students from Philadelphia and Belfast, this is the play that started Tom Reing on the path to creat Inis Nua Theatre Company.
This 2005 play contrasts the lives of teenagers in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia and on the Falls Road in Belfast. Living with Grays Ferry's racial tensions or the sectarian violence of Belfast, these students are torn between the secure insularity of the past and the fast-changing present. The choice to help shape the future will mean walking away from the close-minded attitudes and traditions that they know.
Inis Nua presents contemporary plays from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. When asked why he was drawn to create theatre around these cultures, Founder/Artistic Director Tom Reing said, "Because I love these cultures. I love their histories; but more importantly, I love what they are today and want to share that with audiences. It is the mixing of these cultures' great traditions of storytelling with contemporary themes and times that I think stays with you." Commenting on Inis Nua's Tenth Anniversary Season, Reing said, "I am extremely humbled and proud that Inis Nua has reached its Tenth Anniversary. In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined, when we set out, that we would reach this milestone."
High Noon at Grays Ferry, Twilight on Falls Road, directed by Tom Reing, will be presented January 27 at 7pm at the Off-Broad Street Theater at First Baptist Church, 1636 Sansom Street, Philadelphia.
