IN THE HEIGHTS Arrives at Academy of Music 1/18-23

IN THE HEIGHTS, winner of four 2008 Tony Awards® and the 2008 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album, is coming to the Academy of Music in Philadelphia from January 18 through 23 as part of the Broadway Season. The Broadway Season is presented by the Kimmel Center and Shubert Organization. The press opening is January 18 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets, ranging in price from $20 to $100 are now on sale. Tickets can be purchased by calling 215-731-3333, online at kimmelcenter.org/broadway, at the Kimmel Center box office (Broad & Spruce Sts. (open daily 10 am to 6 pm) or at the Academy of Music box office (open during performances only). Groups of 10 or more will receive discounts for select performances by calling 215-790-5883 or 866-276-2947. Performances include: Tuesday - Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm; Friday & Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm; Sunday evening at 6:30 pm; and matinees Saturday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm.

IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood - a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

IN THE HEIGHTS opened on Broadway to wide critical acclaim March 9, 2008. The Washington Post said IN THE HEIGHTS is "PURE BROADWAY. AN EVENING OF OLD-STYLE, INNOCENT PLEASURE" and Ben Brantley of The New York Times enthused IN THE HEIGHTS is "AN EXUBERANT, ANIMATED SHRINE TO THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY TIES AND BEING FAITHFUL TO WHERE YOU COME FROM." IN THE HEIGHTS continues to play on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, and will be closing on January 9, 2011 after playing 1,185 performances.
In addition to winning the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show's creator, won the Tony Award for Best Music and Lyrics, Andy Blankenbuehler won for Best Choreography, and Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman won for Best Orchestrations. The original cast recording won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, and Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a feature film based on the smash hit musical.

With a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominee and Philadelphia native Quiara Alegría Hudes and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, IN THE HEIGHTS is directed by Joseph A. Callaway Award-winner and Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail. The music arrangements are by Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman. IN THE HEIGHTS also features Tony nominated scenic design (Anna Louizos), costumes (Paul Tazewell), lighting (Howell Binkley), and sound (ACME Sound Partners).

The Broadway Season is presented by the Kimmel Center and The Shubert Organization.
