Society Hill Playhouse will be celebrating Mother's Day with the Philadelphia Premiere of I Am (Not) My Mother, a play by Suzanne Beal with music by Jessica Bowers. The show will begin its run on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 7:00 PM. The theatre is located at 507 South 8th Street.
I Am (Not) My Mother is the culmination of the stories of hundreds of women. An ensemble piece that follows the story of any mother and daughter, I Am (Not) My Mother , by Suzanne Beal, is a cornucopia of insight as voiced through spoken word, poetry and features original music by Jessica Bowers. This piece focuses on the trial, tribulations, joys and experiences that bond parents and their children. Through embracing the diversity of each individual's experience, a common thread of humanity is extracted and celebrated. From tough love advice on puberty, work, food and decorum, I Am (Not) My Mother follows the life cycle of the mother/daughter relationship from birth to departure in a tangibly universal series of vignettes.
I Am (Not) My Mother was crafted by Beal from a series of story circles with women talking about their mothers, with over 90 women involved. Original music was then created specifically for this show by Jessica Bowers. It is a true celebration of mothers and motherhood. Laugh. Cry. Identify.
