The Good Person of Szechwan, one of the best-known works of the German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, will be presented by the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts at the University of the Arts. Directed by Dr. Heinz-Uwe Haus, an internationally renowned director and one of the world's leading authorities on Brecht, The Good Person of Szechwan will be presented at the Arts Bank Theater on November 11-13 & 17-19.
Bertolt Brecht, best known as the author of The Threepenny Opera, is a dramatist who envisioned an "epic theater" that would be a forum for the political and social issues of his time. Szechwan tells the story of the prostitute Shen Te, who has the good fortune to receive an unexpected windfall. When she tries to use her newfound riches to live as a "good person," she finds that no good deed goes unpunished. Despite the purity of her intentions to live a good life, she is forced to resort to a devious trick to achieve her desired goals.
Educated and trained in Germany, director Dr. Heinz-Uwe Haus began his long artistic and academic career as director at the Deutsches Theatre Berlin, and is a founding member of the East German Directing Institute and head of its Directing Department. In addition to his work in Germany, he has directed for The National Theatres of Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey, and worked with companies from Chile, Finland, Italy, South Korea, Canada, and the USA. His productions have appeared in Festivals throughout Europe.
Good Person features an ensemble of more than twenty students from the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts' BFA Acting and Musical Theatre programs. Acting junior Erin Carney portrays the title role. Brind School Assistant Professor Linda Henderson is musical director for the production, and has adapted music composed by Paul Dessau to be performed by the ensemble as singers and instrumentalists. Guest scenic designer William Browning is a faculty member at the University of Delaware's Professional Theater Training Program. Students in the Brind School's conservatory training programs create all costume design, lighting design, stage management and dramaturgy.
