Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans displacing thousands of people and flooding the streets. On August 27, 2005, EgoPo arrived in Philadelphia to begin technical rehearsals for a production of The Maids x 2, a ground-breaking version of Jean Genet's classic, The Maids. Three days later, EgoPo was stranded in Philadelphia as a result of Katrina. Their home in New Orleans, The Jewel Theater, was destroyed along with the homes of most of the company members.
EgoPo found a new home in Philadelphia, and rebuilt itself with the help of the Philadelphia theater community. Dozens of organizations and individual theater artists went out of their way to help in the initial days and months following the hurricane. A huge showing of support came from Deborah Block and the Fringe Festival, who raised over $5,000 by selling beads at the Fringe bar.
EgoPo's first Philadelphia production was Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, and the show was Barrymore Nominated. Since then, EgoPo has produced a full season every year, creating themed festivals based on styles, time periods, or playwrights.
For their 10th Anniversary in Philadelphia, EgoPo is excited to present AMERICAN GIANTS II: THE WOMEN, celebrating influential female playwrights of the early 20th century. THE CHILDREN'S HOUR by Lillian Hellman, directed by Adrienne Mackey, opens the season and runs from October 7 to October 25.
