Curio Theatre Company Announces 2018-2019 Season

Curio Theatre Company has announced its 2018-2019 Season. For its 14th Season, the company is looking at three pieces of classic theatre through a new lens. Their season begins in October with a production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons (October 10-November 3), continues with the American Premiere of The Three Sisters by Rash Dash, after Chekhov (February 6-March 2), and closes with William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale (April 24-May 18). All shows are performed at Curio's home theatre at the Calvary Center for Culture and Community, 4740 Baltimore Avenue.

"We are extremely excited about our upcoming season. We have an American classic in All My Sons by Arthur Miller, a North American premiere of RashDash's reinterpretation of Chekov's classic play that took The Royal Court Theatre in London by storm and finally, Shakespeare's Classic, The Winter's Tale. As we always do at Curio, the audience can expect an immersive and fully experienced production every time they are here," said Curio Theatre Company Artistic Director Paul Kuhn.

Joe and Kate Keller are living a comfortable suburban life with their son Chris, but tragedy looms over the household. The American premiere of a play by UK artists RashDash, Three Sisters by RashDash, after Chekhov is a wild, irreverent spin on the well-trod classic that entertains with absurdist comedy and bombastic musical numbers while it asks us vital questions. Are women forever doomed to recite the beautiful, brilliant words of dead white men, and what does it mean to produce a play that is both one of the greatest tragedies of all time, and an unfortunate go-to choice when theatre companies decide they need a play that features women? Playing the three iconic women from theatre are the actresses who played three sisters in last season's Crimes of the Heart at Curio: Colleen Hughes, Rachel Gluck, and Tessa Kuhn.

The Winter's Tale

Written toward the end of William Shakespeare's career, The Winter's Tale is a story of folly, forgiveness and redemption. It begins when Leontes, King of Sicily, destroys his family and his oldest friendship in a fit of jealous rage that transforms him into a tyrant. What follows is a play unique among Shakespeare's work. The Winter's Tale is part tragedy, part comedy, and concludes with perhaps the most controversial ending ever penned by the Bard.

About Curio Theatre Company

Curio Theatre Company's mission is to serve audiences in West Philadelphia and beyond with high quality, affordable theatre performances; to develop artistic talent through ensemble, company-based training and rehearsal processes; and to further academic, social, and personal development through arts education. The artistic and the educational arms of the theatre company are intertwined as we make our home in the diverse community of West Philadelphia. The company's Educational program was awarded the 2017 Victory Theatre Education Award at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony. It marked the company's first Barrymore Award. Curio Theatre Company is a 501(c)3 non-profit company based in West Philadelphia. The Company was founded by professional artists and administrators who met at the Hedgerow Theatre in Rose Valley, PA, and incorporated as a non-profit in 2004.". After touring locally and internationally for several years, the Company began a search for a permanent home. In January 2005, Curio Theatre Company joined in partnership with the Calvary Center for Culture and Community at 4740 Baltimore Avenue, Philadelphia. This partnership provides Curio with a performance venue and classrooms within the Calvary Center as well as office space and company housing in the adjacent parish house. In return Curio is assisting the Calvary Center in creating a professional Performing Arts Venue in the heart of West Philadelphia.
