The Same Stream, an East Coast based professional choir quickly making a name for itself on the national and international music scenes, is happy to announce their upcoming collaboration with world-renowned composer Paul Mealor.
The choir will be performing some of Paul's most famous pieces, including his Stabat Mater, as well as a collection of newer repertoire in concert at 7:30 PM on Monday August 7th at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, with a post-concert reception and Q&A with the composer to follow the performance.
Paul Mealor was catapulted to international stardom in April 2011, when 2.5 billion people (the largest audience in broadcasting history) heard his Motet, Ubi caritas. Since then, Paul has become known as one of today's greatest living composers. Hailed by the New York Times as "the most important composer to have emerged in Welsh choral music since William Matthias," Mealor's work has sent tidal waves through the classical music world. His piece for the Military Wives Choir (conducted by Gareth Malone) has been named, by the Official Charts Company, as the fastest selling single since Elton John's Candle in the Wind. In 2014, he was voted the UK's favorite living composer during ClassicFM's UK Hall of Fame series.
About this upcoming collaboration with The Same Stream, Paul Mealor says:
"I am massively excited to be working with the fabulous Same Stream Choir - one of the hottest New Groups out there. They sing with such warmth, honesty and beauty, and their amazing conductor and artistic director, James Jordan, is a man of the most sincere and deeply spiritual artistic convictions. I just know they will bring my music to life with such professionalism, tonal and melodic warmth and a true sense of beauty."
The Same Stream, a professional choir made-up of graduates from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, is under the artistic direction of their conductor James Jordan. Jordan is recognized and praised around the musical world as one of America's pre-eminent conductors, writers, and innovators in choral music. He has been described as a "visionary" by The Choral Journal, which cited his book Evoking Sound as a "must read." Jordan serves as Professor and Senior Conductor at Westminster Choir College.
About the collaboration, James Jordan says:
It has been a dream of mine to record an album of the music of my friend Paul Mealor. The Same Stream has both a love and a deep-seated affinity for Paul's music, and the message it holds for listeners around the world. Moreover, it is a deep honor and privilege to perform these great scores in Philadelphia at the outstanding Cathedral Basilica.
The Same Stream choir is committed to concert, community engagement, and recording projects which spread choral music to diverse audiences, and support the work of emerging and living composers from around the world. Their previous recording project "ABIDE", to be released later this year, exclusively features musical works by living composers. They have presented and recorded pieces in the past by three Philadelphia-area composers: Cortlandt Matthews, Thomas LaVoy, and Kile Smith. In the days following this August concert, The Same Stream will record this repertoire for their next album, which will be released in 2018.
The concert begins at 7:30 PM on Monday August 7th, 2017, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. A free-will offering will be taken during the concert.
Audience members are invited to a post-concert wine and cheese reception, talk, and meet-and-greet with conductor James Jordan, composer Paul Mealor, and members of the choir.
Premium, reserved seating tickets for the concert and reception are $20 each.
