The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber covers thirty-one numbers from twelve Andrew Lloyd Webber shows. These shows include both hits, flops, and favorites - Cats, Evita, Phantom, Sunset Boulevard, Aspects of Love, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph, Song and Dance, Whistle Down the Wind, Starlight Express, The Woman in White and The Beautiful Game. Webber's songs are well loved for their musicality and they are well served by the incredible vocals of six Broadway stars.
These actors and actresses boast both great voices and great resumes, creating a breathtaking performance. Howard McGillin, best known for performing the title role in The Phantom of the Opera over 2,500 times, has incredible diction and clarity. Laurie Gay Stephenson shows incredible soprano range throughout the show, but truly shines in "The Phantom of the Opera." Kathy Voytko sings big numbers like "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and a voice to match. Jeremy Kushnier wails on the high notes in the more rock, up-tempo numbers. The rock equivalent female is Deone Zanotta. Her personality and vocals often steals the show. And last but certainly not least, is Kevin Kern, and from the moment he opens his mouth, it is impossible not to fall in love with his pure tones, especially on love songs like "Too Much in Love to Care" and "All I ask of You."
The show also features a 27-piece onstage orchestra conducted by Musical Director, Edward G. Robinson. The orchestra not only accompanies the singers, but also performs several overtures throughout the night. The lighting design is the most memorable technical detail. The number of intelligent lights, the colors, and the intensities are beautiful and help to change the mood between numbers and shows. The one complaint to be voiced is the incredibly awkward announcement of some shows and numbers and the decision to not introduce others.
All in all The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is a perfect night for musical theater lovers. The performances will leave you in awe and you're sure to leave the theater humming.
The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber runs now through February 14th at the Merriam Theater. For more information please see the official press release.
