For the second year in a row, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is at Bucks County Playhouse. This show is time warping its way through Bucks County Playhouse just in time for Halloween. It is a cult classic and has everything you loved about the movie in a live stage version. Bucks County Playhouse certainly hits the mark in their current production of this legendary rock musical.
Describing THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW premise is a bit of an odd journey, for those familiar with the film or the show they will know what to expect. The basic plot involves a newly engaged couple, Janet and Brad, who are caught in a rainstorm and end up at the castle of a mad transvestite scientist, Frank-N-Furter, who unveils his newest creation to a mad cap cast of interesting characters. The music, lyrics and book are by Richard O'Brien, and the show gained a cult following immediately after it premiered in London in 1973. The show is known for its risqué costumes and over the top movement, and the production under the direction of Hunter Foster at Bucks County Playhouse is no exception.
The entire cast of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is electrifying. In the roles of Janet and Brad are Alyse Alan Louis and Nick Cearley. Louis does not miss a beat with her performance as she wonderfully portrays the innocent Janet who evolves into a not-so-innocent character later in the show. Cearley is a seamless match as he is perfectly geeky as Brad, and I was delighted by his song, "Once in a While." THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW begins strong with the song, "Science Fiction" performed by Magenta (Ryah Nixon) and Riff Raff (Jeremy Kushnier). Nixon and Kushnier get the audience in the spirit for the show, and both are standout performers. Playing the role of Frank-n-Furter is Kevin Cahoon. Cahoon is captivating in this part, and he ranges from feisty in "Sweet Transvestite" to passionate in "I'm Going Home." Erik Altemus plays Rocky, and he radiates with energy from the beginning of the show to the end. In the role of the narrator is John Bolton. Bolton is amusingly calm and stoic, as he portrays his rendition of this straight-laced character throughout the show. Rounding out this amazing cast is Jennifer Cody as Columbia. Cody is spunky and adorable, and she adds pizazz to the show. This production is highly entertaining, and audiences will love this production. Practice your "Time Warp" and go to Bucks County Playhouse before the run ends.
