Of Mythic Proportions, the educational outreach program of B. Someday Productions was nominated for a Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service on Monday, August 3, 2010. The nomination was announced at the Press Conference at the general meeting for the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia at the New Freedom Theatre, Philadelphia. This is the second nomination for B. Someday, resident at Walking Fish Theatre and the only professional producing and performing theatre company in their Fishtown/Kensington community.
"It is quite an honor to be one of three educational programs in the whole Philadelphia region to be nominated," says Michelle Pauls, director of the program. "Our program, Of Mythic Proportions, is a storytelling performance program where we visit one classroom in Mariana Bracetti High School in Kensington for the entire year. The teaching artists help the students take stories from their own lives and turn them into performances that they themselves perform for elementary school children and the community. After each performance is a discussion around the topics that come up." Of Mythic Proportions started as an anti-violence program and has grown to include yoga, performance poetry and hip hop.
"It changed everything by just the experience of achieving my goal of being positive and learning how to calm myself at certain points in my life," states student Erica Torres, "It helped me realize how much violence is in this world. So it helps me try to keep the peace to try to make a difference."
Winners of all categories for the Barrymore Awards will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Walnut Street Theatre. For more information, visit www.walkingfishtheatre.com.Videos
