After a sold-out, one night only performance in 2012, 1812 Productions is pleased to present a special return engagement of A Tribute to Phyllis Diller. Created by 1812 Productions' Artistic Director, Jennifer Childs, the evening will feature an array of original and classic material including writing from Ms. Diller's autobiography, Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse, celebrated Diller routines, and those of comediennes inspired by Ms. Diller.
A Tribute to
Phyllis Diller will be performed by Jennifer Childs and the venerable
Mary Martello. Owen Robbins joins the evening, accompanying Ms. Childs and Ms. Martello, in performing songs inspired by
Phyllis Diller as well as a selection of Ms. Diller's often overlooked original compositions.
In addition to classic pieces, Ms. Childs will share the story of Ms. Diller's personal involvement with 1812 Productions, particularly her mentorship during the creation of the 2004 production Always a Lady. Ms. Childs says, "
Phyllis Diller has been very important to me both professionally and personally. As a performer she opened the door for so many female stand-ups and studying her comedic style has taught me so much about comedy. She was also a generous mentor and integral part of the process of making Always a Lady, a piece I created with
Jilline Ringle in 2004 about the history of women in comedy. I am proud to be able to pay tribute to both her groundbreaking comedy and incredible generosity. "
A Tribute to
Phyllis Diller will take place Monday, May 12th at 7:30pm and Tuesday, May 13th at 7:30 at Plays &
Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street. All tickets are $25 and can be purchased at 215-592-9560 or at
