Plot turns, trickery and mistaken identity all play a part in the game of love in Mozart’s comic opera. The Marriage of Figaro takes place on one crazy day at the villa of Count Almaviva and is based on the trilogy by 18th century playwright Beaumarchais; the series completed by The Barber of Seville and The Guilty Mother.
Helpmann Award winning director Neil Armfield mixes surprising elements into a traditional setting, with lavish period costumes and a minimalist set alive with bold splashes of colour. Much like love, what appears to be simple is not and traditional ideas are turned on their heads in this much-loved classic opera. The beauty of Mozart’s music ties it all together.
