BWW Review: LA CAGE AUX FOLLES: The Best of Times at Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston
by Nancy Grossman
- Aug 12, 2019
In the summer of 1983, Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein put on a show that was light years ahead of the zeitgeist, vis-a-vis the awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ people in America, and about twenty years before the legalization of same-sex marriage. Yet, after a successful tryout at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, they boldly went where no Broadway musical had gone before when they opened LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at the Palace Theatre on August 21, 1983. Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston concludes its 51st Summer Season with LA CAGE, and I am pleased to report that the show continues to stand the test of time. The three most important components for a successful staging of this musical are the two actors who play the leading men, Georges (J.T. Turner) and Albin (James Darrah), and the dance troupe who comprise Les Cagelles, the drag performers at the Saint-Tropez title nightclub owned by the latter couple, and they collectively win the trifecta.

BWW Review: No Trouble with Theatre by the Sea's THE MUSIC MAN
by Andria Tieman
- Jun 26, 2017
One thing that is incredibly reliable about summer musicals at Theatre by the Sea is that they take the classics you know and love, and perform them at a very high level without trying to go outside of the box. Shows like Meredith Willson's THE MUSIC MAN are classics for a reason, and even if the script seems slightly dated at times, it hearkens back to a nostalgia that's warm and fuzzy, where you can just sit back and revel in the great songs without having to think too much. Theatre by the Sea's take on this beloved musical is comforting like a giant vanilla waffle cone on a hot summer's day, but filled with high energy musical numbers, absolutely amazing sets and talented performances. This is musical theatre at its best, and it's a pleasure to experience it.

BWW Review: Classic, Fantastic WEST SIDE STORY
by Andria Tieman
- Jun 28, 2016
WEST SIDE STORY, the classic retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City places our star-crossed lovers on either side of a turf war between rival gangs. It's a play so iconic and so familiar that even if one hasn't actually seen it, he or she has likely heard the songs and knows the names of Sharks and Jets. Even if you've seen it 100 times, it's very worth stopping by Theatre by The Sea for another viewing. Sometimes a show is practically perfect and doesn't need much tinkering, but skilled direction, choreography and costumes can still elevate a classic to new heights.
