A girl achieves her dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore — and works to integrate the show — in this musical version of the John Waters film. Outside of traditional beauty standards, she faces many prejudices, become an instant celebrity, and fight against racial segregation promoting inclusion of everyone in the city.

This week, the touring production of HAIRSPRAY presented by Broadway Across Canada made its stop in Vancouver. Playing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from April 2nd the 7th, the musical made an indelible mark in Vancouver theatre as a truly memorable and energetic show.

The Peacock Original film follows Quawntay “Bosco” Adams (Aubrey Joseph) as he miraculously escapes from a maximum-security prison to be at his first child’s birth. The film features a strong cast, including Nikki Blonsky as “Tammy,” Tyrese Gibson as “Tootie,” Vivica A. Fox as “Willa,” Theo Rossi as “Ramos,” and more. Watch the video!

HAIRSPRAY is a chipper, wildly energetic show, and if you can leave your inner skeptic at the door, you might see a glimmer of hope. If not that, then you’ll certainly have basked in some joy for a couple of hours.

When it opened on Broadway in 2002, HAIRSPRAY won an extraordinary eight Tony awards. Its popularity has never waned and the tour will visit The Playhouse on December 1-4.

On August 25, non-profit organization Pride and Less Prejudice (PLP) launched a #ReadOutProud fundraising campaign video with LGBTQ celebrities including Adam Rippon, Nicole Maines, Darryl Stephens, and Tig Notaro.
