Dairy Council of California and Partners Build Appetites for Free Summer Meals

Nearly 2 million of California's low-income students have missed out on free, balanced meals from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program, putting health and academic achievement at risk and leaving millions of federally allocated dollars on the table. Through promotional efforts with state and local partners, Dairy Council of California is raising awareness and building support for summer meals in honor of National Dairy Month in June.

'Out of Sterno' begins with meeting Dotty (Nora Thomas), the 23 year old heroine of the play. She is peppy and funny, and expresses her positive slant on everything in her very small world. She also lets us know that her husband, Hamel (Rafael Medina) won't let her leave their apartment, but that she is fine with that. She spends her days working on art projects and watching video recordings of the day she met her husband, 7 years earlier.

Dotty's life in Sterno with her husband Hamel is absolutely perfect! It's a fairy tale, it really is. True, in their seven years of marriage Hamel has forbidden her to leave their tiny apartment or speak to anyone, but Dotty is so very happy to spend her days watching video re-enactments of the day they first met. When a phone call from a mysterious woman threatens to tear their world asunder, Dotty must venture out into the vast city of Sterno, and try to discover what it is to be a "real" woman.
