Over the past decade, performer Carly Sakolove has appeared in “Mamma Mia!” on land – in the 2013–2014 North American tour – and at sea on Royal Caribbean cruise lines.

Mamma Mia! is an absolute blast of a musical when it’s done right, and the current North American touring production goes above and beyond. Accepted as a classic with its charming story, energetic music using hit songs from the 70s disco band ABBA, and the energetic performances that fill the stage, this show is still a hit.

Jukebox musicals generally fall into one of three categories: tribute shows which try to reproduce the music and staging of an iconic musical act as closely as possible (Rain, the Beatles Tribute, for example), biographical narratives (Beautiful, the Carole King Musical and Ain't Too Proud being two good examples), and original stories, wherein a traditional musical theatre book attempts to interweave popular music with a fictional story line.

Today’s subject Christine Sherrill is currently living her theatre life spreading the gospel of the joys of ABBA in the US National Tour of Mamma Mia! where she is playing the lead role of Donna. The show is currently running now through September first in the Opera House at Kennedy Center.

Guilty as charged. I openly admit I really enjoy the ABBA musical, MAMMA MIA! There is a time and place for all kinds of entertainment, and the birth of the jukebox musical can almost certainly be attributed to kind of show MAMMA MIA has become. Now 25 years after it's opening, the national tour that is playing at Shea's Buffalo this week has audiences happily enraptured with a musical comedy that serves solely to entertain. And it most certainly succeeds.

What did our From the opening overture to the curtain call, Mama Mia is a fun and entertaining romp. Upbeat and rollercoaster-esque, the show takes you through a mired of situations and emotions as Sophie attempts to discover her father, while her mother, Donna fights off old feeling for a love thought long dead, all while dealing with the stress of of an upcoming large wedding.critic think of MAMA MIA at Overture Center?

With familiar hits such as “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Honey, Honey,” MAMMA MIA! has a leg up on most musicals: audiences already know the songs. But to surmount and overcome the expectations of audiences is no easy feat. The 25th Anniversary Tour of MAMMA MIA! blows all expectations out of the Grecian waters!

What did our critic think of MAMMA MIA! at Clowes Memorial Hall?

MAMMA MIA! is an electrifying and heartwarming musical that never fails to delight audiences, and the national tour I experienced last night was no exception. From start to finish, the production was filled with infectious energy, stunning choreography, and, most importantly, incredible vocal performances.

25 years after its first production, Mamma Mia! the musical is making the rounds with a stop at Milwaukee's own Marcus PAC. Famously based off the book by Catherine Johnson and featuring music by ABBA, the story centers around Sophie, who is set to get married in Greece, and the mystery of her biological father's identity.

MAMMA MIA! comes to Pittsburgh as part of the 2023-2024 PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh Series, Tuesday, March 26 to Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the Benedum Center.

It started with concerts with the Des Moines Symphony and is continuing this week. On Tuesday night, the 25th anniversary tour of “Mamma Mia” opened at Des Moines Performing Arts for a week-long run.
