BWW Review: BALLYTURK, Tron Theatre, Glasgow

Ballyturk is Enda Walsh's moving meditation on the brevity of our existence - a mundane village with echoes of Dylan Thomas's Llareggub in Under Milk Wood, viewed through a Truman Show style filter of confined artificiality. The result is exuberant, surreal, funny and gut-wrenchingly sad.

A heart-wrenching four-hander, young playwright Kaisa Lundan has penned a very personal play about a family afflicted by brain cancer. Emmy hasn't even reached the prime of her life when cancer ensures she never will. Whilst her husband attempts to care for her and her mother holds faith with internet voodoo and blueberry juice, Emmy knows that optimism is a false god. Hope of a future fades and even the memory of her marriage evaporates. In two interlocking timespans, All the Lights Are On sees how illness robs Emmy of her independence and identity whilst her nearest and dearest must comes to terms with the limits of their capacity to help.
