The survey conducted by the Indian Film Institute an NGO and a Not for Profit body invited top 14 Film Critics of the country through a rating mechanism where a film rated by the Critic at No. 1 spot got 10 marks while the one placed at No. 10 got 01 mark and so on.
To pick a fair representation of films cutting across languages and regions, Critics were chosen from all corners of India. The Critics who participated in the Survey include Ajay Brahmatmaj, Swapan Mullick, Gautaman Bhaskaran, Saibal Chatterjee, K N T Sastry, Ratnottama Sengupta, Namrata Joshi, Dalton L, Alaka Sahani, Sachin Chate, M K Raghavendra, Siraj Syed, Chandi Mukherjee and Arnab Bannerjee.
Speaking about the survey Manjulaa Shirodkar, Director, Indian Film Institute said, 'The pan India exercise is the first-of-its-kind done in the country to reach a consensus among critics to assess the best of Indian cinema. They were asked to share their preferences and not provided a shortlist. What is heartening to note is that the films that made it to the top are those which have the backing of mainstream production houses like Disney India; Junglee Pictures, T Series and Prakash Jha Productions.
'And it is great to see that the actors adjudged the best, be it Rajkummar Rao, Vidya Balan, Irrfan or Ratna Pathak Shah, enjoy fan following across spectrum, blurring the fine lines between so called mainstream and niche cinema. The IFI seeks to redefine the film appreciation dynamics in our country through this exercise.'
Of the 52 films that came up in the final listing, 3 from the top 10 are directed by women filmmakers. Interestingly, Aamir Khan's production 'Secret Superstar' was tied with Jagga Jasoos at No.9 while a small budget film like 'Harikatha Prasanga' on the life of a Yakshagana artist directed by Ananya Kasarvalli tied at No. 10 along with Atanu Ghosh's Mayurakshi.
Each of the Top 10 films has successfully experimented with content and genre. Take Jagga Jasoos, A Death in the Gunj, Mukti Bhavan, Trapped, Ajji, Take Off and even Harikatha Prasanga. Clearly content and script are the winners in the IFI list.
The Indian Film Institute is a Not for Profit NGO established by Filmmaker, Film Festival Director Manoj Srivastava and Film Critic and Film Historian Saibal Chatterjee. The NGO works for the benefit of film makers supporting them with free advice and resources. The IFI works for promotion of the cinematic art through Film Screenings, Film Festivals, Workshops, Master Classes, Film Appreciation courses and also funds researches on Indian Cinema.
BWW Review: TE3N at Sujoy Ghosh Production
Director: Ribhu Dasgupta
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui,
Teen is a suspense thriller set in the backdrop of Kolkata city, that brings together two parallel investigations of two kidnappings and tries its best to build up an explosive, emotionally charged film. To know whether the film is really a gripping thriller or not, just go through the review. Teen Plot: The plot of the film revolves around the life of John Biswas (Amitabh Bachchan), who lost his granddaughter, Angela, in a tragic kidnapping incident that scarred him & his wife Nancy forever. The world has moved but it's John, who hasn't given up his relentless quest for justice. He continues to visit the police station where he's shunned & ignored every day. On the other side, there is Martin Das (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who is an ex-cop turned priest and interestingly, he also has one thing in common with John-Angela's kidnapping! The death of Angela had a life altering impact on both men. But then, one day, there's another kidnapping & everything about it echoes similarity with the kidnapping of Angela. Father Martin is once again dragged into the investigation by cop Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan). While the priest & the cop tackle the new kidnapping, John stubbornly pieces together the identity of Angela's kidnapper from the bits of information that he collects through his own investigations. Will John Biswas be able to find out the culprit or not, forms the crux of the story!
Performances: When a film has actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, there is no second thought about their performances. The trio shines in their roles. There are a few scenes, where Amitabh Bachchan's helplessness and body language have come out on the screen so nicely, that you can easily relate to his character and feel his pain deep inside your heart! Nawazuddin too, leaves no stone unturned in impressing us with his amazing talent and he makes a great impact with his overall performance. However, Vidya has less screen space when compared to Amitabh & Nawazuddin but she did full justice to her role. Technicalities: Teen is surely one of those dishes, which has yummy ingredients but is not well prepared by the chef! And we can see that chef in Director Ribhu Dasgupta! When you cast such powerhouse actors, automatically audiences' expectations from the film is high. But owing to film's poor script or a series of plotholes, Ribhu's story-telling lacks the perfection that ends up leaving the film quite predictable. We also felt that the movie needed a tighter editing. Unfortunately, the pace of the film is also very slow which is yet another drawback of this suspense thriller.
Verdict: If you are expecting a nail-biting thriller from Teen, then surely this one is not for you! But you can surely give it a shot to witness the classic acting of Mr Bachchan! We give an extra half star to Amitabh Bachchan's arresting performance!
