BWW Review: Twisty GIDION'S KNOT at Counter-Productions Theatre Company

Counter-Productions Theatre Company's GIDION'S KNOT may run at just about an hour in length, but their effective production of this one-act play, directed by Kira Hawkridge, leaves the audience with plenty to mull over.
BWW Review: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at Academy Players

HEDWIG is one of those musicals that is a perfect balance of humor and tragedy with absolutely fantastic songs. The production currently at Academy Players, directed by Ted Clement is so satisfying to watch, and is an overwhelming spectacle of music with an incredibly talented cast. Kevin Broccoli commands the stage as Hedwig and Vic Leo is the perfect compliment (antagonist?) as Yitzhak. This is truly not a show to miss.
BWW Review: 'Once You Write Something Down It's Forever' - ISABELLA at Counter-Productions Theatre Company

ISABELLA, written and directed by David J. Valentin, holds its world-premiere this weekend at AS220's Black Box Theatre. The play is both timely - given the nation's current opioid epidemic - and timeless, as addictions and the lengths to which people will go to protect their desired vision of life, are not a new phenomenon.
Counter-Productions Theatre Company Presents ISABELLA

Counter-Productions Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Isabella by David J. Valentin. Isabella is a tragic tale of how far a family can fall after tragedy strikes, and how an artist uses her craft to escape her unbearable circumstances. The story revolves around the eponymous Isabella, a teenager who lives on the streets with her addict mother, Karen, and the mother's manipulative boyfriend, Eddie. When Eddie gets into a scrape with his regular drug dealer, the 'family' is forced down an unfortunate path. With Isabella, playwright and director David J. Valentin creates a powerfully intimate look at life on the streets.

BWW Review: THE FINAL VOYAGE OF X MINUS ONE at Counter-Productions Theatre Company

As a theatre reviewer, I have the privilege of watching all kinds of productions. Everything from Shakespeare to locally-written original works is up for grabs. Occasionally, though, one needs to bring in an expert, which is what I opted to do for my review of The Final Voyage of X Minus One at AS220's Black Box theatre. It's not that this production is hard to understand, or less entertaining to those who are not intimately familiar with sci-fi, but genre works tend to have a lot of subtle nods and winks that may go over the layperson's head, and I was concerned about missing something important. So I brought in a ringer, in the form of my geeky husband Ryan Michney, and I've included his thoughts below.
BWW Review: Counter-Productions Theatre Group's World Premiere of KILL THE VIRGIN is Sexy and Smart

KILL THE VIRGIN, the latest offering by playwright Kevin Broccoli and produced by Counter-Productions Theatre Company is a cheeky and self-aware look at the cliches in horror movies.  Thankfully, unlike the Scary Movie franchise, it manages to stay away from the gross-out humor and instead relies on quick wit and observation of the tropes that we've all seen in teen movies, and may be so accustomed to that they barely register anymore.  Excellent acting and the fine direction of Ted Clement bring this fun and twisted romp to life, and while it's still a bit clunky in parts, it's exciting, genuinely funny and awfully sexy.
Counter-Productions Theatre Company to Present KILL THE VIRGIN

Counter-Productions Theatre Company will present the world premiere of Kill The Virgin by Rhode Island playwright, Kevin Broccoli. This absurdist play explores the role of women as featured in one of the most popular modern film genres. Set in "Anytown, America," the play tells the story of Ali, a misfit teenager who suddenly becomes aware that she is actually a doomed character in a horror movie. 'I wanted to write a play about a girl who refuses to be a victim," says Broccoli, "even when the world around her has other plans."
Photo Flash: First Look at Community College of Rhode Island's ROCKY HORROR SHOW

During a recent rehearsal, Community College of Rhode Island Associate Professor Ted Clement was bouncing around in the Bobby Hackett Theater, explaining his vision for blocking to the cast of the upcoming CCRI Players musical, 'The Rocky Horror Show.' Antonio DiPrete, playing Dr. Frank N. Furter, stood in front, his hip jutting out, trying his best to be comfortable. DiPrete was dressed for a pickup basketball game, but with stiletto heels.
