BWW Review: A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD Returns to Children's Theatre

Nearly 10 years after this production garnered three Tony nominations in a Broadway run, it's back at the home that commissioned and created it: Children's Theater Company in Minneapolis. Based on Arnold Lobel's Caldecott and Newbery winning fables about friendship between Frog, a fairly organized fellow, and Toad, who is much less together, it models how we can bond with those unlike us, if we are kind, and we listen.

BWW Review: CINDERELLA at Children's Theatre Company

There's something for everybody in this raucous and hilarious CINDERELLA: plenty of glitter and stage magic and romance (lite) for the kids, but also cat videos, a Tshirt slingshot, a killer drag rendition of Joe Cocker's “You are So Beautiful” and even a poop emoji blanket. It's a really smart show that hews to the moral center of the old fairy tale but steers entirely clear of stuffiness.

Children's Theatre Company (CTC) presents the back-by-popular-demand production of Cinderella.  This rambunctious musical originally created by CTC brings together the heart-warming, classic story of Cinderella's transformation, a Victorian Christmas party with lavish period costumes, grandiose sets and holiday carols, with brand-new, clever pop culture references, shameless physical comedy, audience participation, and gut-busting gags.

STAGE TUBE: Theater Latté Da Presents RAGTIME

Theater Latte Da continues its season with the classic Broadway musical, Ragtime. It's the turn-of-the-century, everything is changing and anything is possible. Based on E.L. Doctorow's landmark novel, Ragtime is set in the volatile melting pot of New York City. Three distinct American stories are woven together-a determined Jewish immigrant, a daring Harlem musician, and a stifled woman of privilege united by their courage, compassion and belief in a better tomorrow. Together they confront what it means to be an American at the dawn of a new century. With a compelling book by Terrence McNally and a glorious score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, Ragtime was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and was awarded Best Book and Best Score.
BWW Interview: Theater Latte Da RAGTIME's David L. Murray, Jr.

Conflicts due to race, immigration and gender... you would think this turn-of-the-century story would seem like ancient history but instead it feels fresh and relevant as today's headlines. RAGTIME plays through Oct. 23 at Theater Latte Da and stars a new local actor, David L. Murray, Jr., whom we get to know in 6 Questions & a Plug.

BWW Review: Park Square Theatre's New Play NINA SIMONE: FOUR WOMEN is a Powerful and Important Play about a Powerful and Important Woman

I know next to nothing about jazz singer and Civil Rights activist Nina Simone. But I do know Regina Marie Williams, Aimee K. Bryant, Thomasina Petrus, and Traci Allen Shannon, the four women starring in the new play based on Nina's song 'Four Women.' So I knew I was in for a treat and an education with Park Square Theatre's world premiere of NINA SIMONE: FOUR WOMEN. I was not wrong on either count. Proving once again that everything I know I learned from theater, I now have a greater understanding of the remarkable and talented woman that was Nina Simone, as well as the importance of her music and her voice in the Civil Rights movement. And watching these particular four women, some of the best voices and actors we have here in the Twin Cities, bring full and complicated life to the Peaches, Auntie, Saffronia, and Sweet Thing of Nina's song, is a treat of the highest order.
