by Roy Berko - Apr 23, 2018
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, author of 'Appropriate,' which is now getting a compelling staging at Dobama, Cleveland's 'off-Broadway theatre,' is noted for writing plays that shimmer in spectacle, theatricality, and melodramatic substance. The African American centers his themes on race in America, white privilege, the ills of capitalism, and the use and abuse of minorities to build the 'American dream.'

Our nation is in the midst of a national election, and local theatres have responded with a series of plays that examine various foibles and stories of political intrigue. Ensemble is staging former County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones' THE BLOODLESS JUNGLE (September 15-October 2) about a rising idealistic political star running for a pivotal Congressional seat. The Musical Theater Project is featuring THE CRADLE WILL ROCK (September 21 & September 25), a play about Unionism with political undertones. Cleveland Public Theatre is presenting 44 PLAYS FOR 44 PRESIDENTS (October 6-29), which showcases the life and times of the 44 Presidents of the United States, featuring an all-female cast. BWW Review: Funny, Throught-provoking THE REALISTIC JONESES at Dobama
by Roy Berko - Jan 25, 2016
What do Tracy Letts (SUPERIOR DONUTS), Yasmina Reza (GOD OF CARNAGE), Amy Herzog (4000 MILES), and David Adjmi (MARIE ANTOINETTE) have in common. Their names all appear on the best new contemporary playwrights' lists. Many also are names which, if you have been to Dobama during the past couple of years, you have seen their plays produced.
BWW Review: Memerizing Production of Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE at Cleveland Play House
by Roy Berko - Oct 19, 2015
Arthur Miller, the author of THE CRUCIBLE, which is now in production at the Cleveland Play House's Outcalt Theatre, was one of the most important modern American playwrights. Credited with being the developer of the contemporary definition of the American tragedy, he would have been 100 this year. Ironically, this is CPH's one-hundreth birthday, as well.

BWW Reviews: ISF's LES MISERABLES Is Full Of Les Talent Merveilleux
by Teresa Rodrick - Jul 14, 2014
LES MIS(ERABLE) is a musical that starts with a powerful song by the prisoners. The way that the director, Victoria Bussert began the production gave the impression that the story that you were about to hear was a remembrance of Jean Valjean's life. I think when that happens, sometimes you pay more attention so you won't miss something important.
BWW Reviews: ISF DEATHTRAP
by Teresa Rodrick - Jun 9, 2014
For this production of DEATHTRAP, you notice that it is a home. Maybe a summer or winter home, but definitely someone's house. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with weaponry: guns, knives, swords. It reminded me of the museum at the Tower of London. The Scenic Designer is Russell Matheny.
