Tor Campbell is an award-winning director, choreographer, and educator whose work has transformed stages and inspired communities worldwide. A Milwaukee native, Tor earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Theater from Marymount Manhattan College and recently completed his MFA in Directing at Northwestern University, where he honed his craft and explored the transformative power of storytelling.
As a director, Tor is celebrated for crafting compelling narratives that engage audiences and ignite conversations. Recent directing credits include Sweat by Lynn Nottage at Northwestern University, The Prom, and Godspell. His upcoming projects include Hairspray at Uptown Music Theatre and assistant directing The Color Purple and Fat Ham at Goodman Theatre. Tor’s productions consistently showcase his commitment to storytelling as a force for empathy, healing, and social justice, often incorporating personal narratives into larger themes.
An accomplished choreographer, Tor’s work has earned critical acclaim and accolades, including Best Choreography and Best Director from the Los Angeles Theatre Awards. Highlights include The Full Monty at Paramount Theatre, Dreamgirls at Cupcake Theater, and The Hero Within at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. His international experience includes creating Broadway-style revues and directing large-scale productions at Sands Macau in China, blending precision with emotional resonance to bring stories to life.
Tor is equally dedicated to education, currently serving as an adjunct professor at Lake Forest College, where he teaches musical theater dance techniques. He has also held teaching roles at the University of California, Irvine, and Northwestern University. Through his teaching, Tor fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment, mentoring students in directing, acting, and theater history.
In addition to his artistic contributions, Tor is the Northwestern Directing Fellow at Goodman Theatre, where he supports the theater’s artistic mission and mentors creatives. He also serves as a Reader for the Eugene O’Neill National Musical Theater Conference and the American Musical Theatre Project, demonstrating his dedication to uplifting both the next generation of artists and seasoned community members.
Tor’s career reflects a passion for using storytelling and personal narratives to inspire, uplift, and create lasting change, with his work resonating both nationally and internationally.
