It's back! Just last year I made the prediction that Philip Grecian's A Christmas Story: The Play would become a yearly staple, becoming the Christmas equivalent of Rocky Horror. To my delight, I was correct. Distinct from the more popular but more sentimentalized musical version by Pasek and Paul, Grecian's play version amplifies the farcical qualities and kid-brain surrealism of Jean Shepherd's memoirs into a fast, funny and chaotic offering. It may run two and a half hours, but this one flies by like a ninety minute movie without commercials.

The pair met while studying at Carnegie Mellon and the cabaret marks their City Theatre debut. Fresh off the success of their work on the Disney Channel's VAMPIRINA, the duo will host a two night only event on the theater's main stage showcasing music from their award winning works including Dani Girl and Romantics Anonymous with a few holiday favorites sprinkled in. Music directed by Nick Stamatakis, A Holiday Homecoming will run on the City Theatre Main Stage, November 30 and December 1. Tickets are on sale now.

Putney and McGeever both nail the sitcom rhythms of their dialogue, Putney channeling Kristin Bell's frayed-around-the-edges perkiness while McGeever strongly recalls Jesse Tyler Ferguson's squirmy tragicomedy in cult classic The Class. The rapport between the two of them is realistically uneasy, feeling alternately welcome and pathetic in both antagonistic and romantic moments. As directed by Joshua Kahan Brody, the balance never slides to firmly for too long to the 'funny' or 'dour' side of the sadcom scale, assisted by the intermittent interjections of Kendra McLaughlin's taciturn Geena.
