THE KITCHEN PRESENTS ASSEMBLY, JUNE 15-30
Over three weekends this month, June 15-30, The Kitchen's spaces will be stripped of their defining uses as gallery, theater, and office. Each floor will be emptied then activated sequentially by musicians, dancers, performance artists, and DJs using custom sound and video systems.
The Kitchen Presents Exhibition And Performances By ANOHNI
The Kitchen presents an expansive new project from ANOHNI, beginning with LOVE, an exhibition of new works in painting and drawing, photography, sculpture, and archival video revolving in part around the figure of Antony and the Johnsons' late member Julia Yasuda; as well as an ambitious new theater piece, The Johnsons Present LOVE, building on the work of The Johnsons and Blacklips Performance Cult, two performance groups that ANOHNI founded in the 1990s. As in the exhibition, these performances will be composed of new work in addition to material from previous decades, featuring an incredible cast of artists, actors, and performers both familiar with and new to these writings: Charles Atlas, Matteah Baim, Michael Cavadias, Tom Cole, Johanna Constantine, Eliza Douglas, Scott Jackson, Connie Fleming, Lorraine O'Grady, Lola Naisse, Kembra Pfahler, Marti Wilkerson, and Colin Whitaker. On May 16, ANOHNI will be honored alongside sculptor Robert Gober at The Kitchen's Spring 2019 Gala.
The Kitchen Presents Miho Hatori: SALON MONDIALITE
The Kitchen presents Miho Hatori: Salon Mondialite, an imaginary, experimental TV talk show, inspired by Martinique-born poet and thinker Edouard Glissant's words. Instead of conversations, Hatori creates sound stories through improvisation and ambient chanting, with guest musicians Smokey Hormel and Patrick Higgins. The Salon features a video installation by the artist and an appearance from special guest performer Melvin "Grave" Guzman. Curated by Tim Griffin.
The Kitchen And Arts For Art Present IDENTITY: FREEDOM
New York-based free jazz organization Arts for Art collaborates with The Kitchen to present free jazz ensembles in a multidisciplinary program of improvisation over the course of three evenings, March 7-9, 2019, at The Kitchen. From jazz, dance, and poetry to political discourse, these concerts consist of musical and discursive interjections among participants, which segue into conversations that are inclusive of audiences. The events aim to foster and celebrate new interrelationships among participants and audiences as they revolve around our conceptions of social justice. Titled IDENTITY: FREEDOM, the project declares liberation in both self-possession and movement.

The Kitchen Presents Leila Bordreuil PIECE FOR CELLO AND DOUBLE BASS ENSEMBLE II
The Kitchen presents Leila Bordreuil's Piece for Cello and Double Bass Ensemble II, the newest in her series of compositions for amplified cello and six double-basses, which she began in 2015. This work will feature her largest and loudest ensemble yet, creating a violent wall of sound as she uses varied amps and microphones to give immense proportions and unrecognizable textures to acoustic instruments. The piece, with roots in musique concrete, contemporary noise, and even spectral music, features Zach Rowden, Sean Ali, Britton Powell, Greg Chudzik, Nick Dunston, and Vinicius Ciccone Cajado. The event will feature opening acts by improvisational vocalist Charmaine Lee on November 20 and Dylan Scheer (also known as Via App) on November 21. Organized by Tim Griffin.
Morgan Bassichis Brings DAMNED IF YOU DUET to The Kitchen
The Kitchen presents comedic musical performer Morgan Bassichis: Damned if You Duet, demonstrating that there's no better way to learn basic interpersonal skills in adulthood than to duet (November 1-2). In an evening of songs for two, Bassichis will perform the pleasure and pitfalls of the duo form with a lineup of very special guests: artist Malik Gaines, child star Helen Messineo-Pandjiris, cellist Ethan Philbrick, choreographer Mariana Valencia, and perhaps-falling as it does during a time of year where the "veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thin"-some less tangible partners. The Kitchen is pleased to welcome back acclaimed instrumentalist and composer Tyshawn Sorey to present three evenings of performances offering the fullest overview of his various working methods to date-including intergenerational collaborations and ritual works, as well as pieces featuring his percussion cage, modern jazz comprising highly-detailed forms that contain harmonic chromaticism and varying degrees of ensemble interplay, and a newly-formed ensemble that integrates spoken word, turntablism, and spontaneous composition.
