The Dream Syndicate Share Video For New Single 'The Longing'
When The Dream Syndicate emerged in the early 80s, front man Steve Wynn declared, “We're playing music we want to hear because nobody else is doing it.” He added, “I'll compromise on what I eat or where I sleep, but I won't compromise on what music I play.” Both were true, and although their template of Velvet Underground meets Crazy Horse may seem commonplace today (and let's not forget, the Syndicate spawned many imitators), their raw twin guitar, bass and drums approach was not common during an era when slick, polished MTV bands ruled.
BWW Dance Review: Anna Sokolow
All the other works on the program were by Anna Sokolow in different periods of her choreographic and teaching careers. Some had direct themes, which surprised me since I did not do any in-depth research before the performance. I preferred if the works spoke to me directly, as I had never seen any of them before in my dance going career.
The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble to Perform at 14th St. Y, 3/9-13
The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble will present a program of works by legendary modern dance choreographer Anna Sokolow, a tribute to the melting pot that is New York, including the rarely seen Ride the Culture Loop, created in 1975 for the Juilliard Dance Ensemble, and the world premiere of We Remember by guest choreographer and former company member Rae Ballard, March 9-13 at the Theater at the 14h Street Y, 344 East 14th Street. Other Sokolow works are the 1968 Steps of Silence and her tribute to her friend Kurt Weill, created in 1988. All works have been staged by longtime Sokolow company members.

As part of the Art After 5 series, the Philly-based band will perform today, May 9 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The band is made up of internationally renowned vibraphonist Tony Miceli, vocalist/harmonicist Paul Jost, bassist Kevin MacConnell and drummer Charlie Patierno. This event is free with museum admission, $20; seniors $18; youth, 13 to 18, and students with valid ID $14; children 12 and under free. Nine of Miles Davis' earliest albums on Columbia Records, encompassing music that he recorded for the label in monaural sound from 1956 to 1961 (and released from 1957 to 1964), will be issued together on CD for the first time as Miles Davis:The Original Mono Recordings. This historic box set, comprising nine CDs in mini-LP replica jackets, will be available everywhere today, November 12, 2013 through Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
