The Dramatists Guild Legal Defense Fund has announced that the recipient of the 2021 Defender of the Year Award is Sharai Bohannon. The Defender Award is given in recognition of an individual, group, or organization’s efforts in support of free expression in the dramatic arts.

On July 29, 2019, the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc. will hold its annual Awards Night in the Penthouse Lounge at the American Airlines Theater in New York City. Among the other honors given that night, an award from the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund will be presented to Svetlana Mintcheva, Director of Programing at the National Coalition Against Censorship for their fierce commitment to protecting and advocating the First Amendment.

The National Coalition Against Censorship, Freemuse and Spectrum will celebrate Music Freedom Day with a listening party, screening and live performances in support of at-risk, banned, and imprisoned musicians and composers around the world. Today's March 3 event will include a pre-premiere screening of an excerpt of They Will Have To Kill Us First, a documentary about the brutal suppression of music in Mali.

KLINGHOFFER Anti-Censorship Statement Gains New Co-signer

The National Coalition Against Censorship has added a new co-signer to its statement (read online) opposing the Metropolitan Opera's cancellation of live, high-definition screenings of John Adams' opera, The Death of Klinghoffer, to 65 countries. The International Committee for Artists' Freedom has joined as a co-signer, adding to the National Opera Association, Article 19, The Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, Free Expression Policy Project, freeDimensional, Freemuse, and PEN American Center. The statement urges the Metropolitan and its director, Peter Gelb, to reconsider and proceed with the scheduled simulcast. The list of organizations joining the statement is expected to continue growing.

Nat'l Organizations Urge Smithsonian to Adopt New Policies and Procedures

Today, a group of national and Washington D.C. art and free speech organizations sent a letter to the Smithsonian Board of Regents asking them to adopt explicit policies that uphold First Amendment principles, as well as an open procedure for responding to complaints, whether coming from the general public or from elected politicians. The Board of Regents is meeting Monday, January 31st, and will be discussing the Hide/Seek controversy.
