BWW Review: THE WHITE DEVIL, Shakespeare's Globe

John Webster is not what you could ever describe as a subtle writer. His bloody themes of lust, revenge and tragedy are overt and unflinching. The White Devil is based on an extraordinary true-life story in the Venetian court, where Duke Bracciano decides to seduce Vittoria with the help of her brother Flamineo, who is motivated by social mobility and power. The fact that both characters are already married seems no barrier. The result is an intoxicating and decadent game of power play and lust that leads to murder, revenge and the destruction of their very existence.

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) and Miller Theatre at Columbia University (Executive Director Melissa Smey) will present the 2012 Brighton Festival production of A WORLD I LOVED: The Story of an Arab Woman, for two nights only, November 28 and 29, at Columbia University's Miller Theatre (2960 Broadway). Written by Mariam C. Said and Vanessa Redgrave, and directed and narrated by Redgrave, A WORLD I LOVED is a one-of-a-kind theatrical event based on the memoir of Said's mother, Wadad Makdisi Cortas, an Arab woman who lived through and chronicled one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history, interweaving her personal experiences as a student, teacher and then principal in a girls' school in Beirut with the wider political and historical narrative of Lebanon throughout the 20th century.

Review - The Flying Karamazov Brothers in 4Play

Family fun is rarely as tantalizingly edgy as when that troupe from of the old days of new vaudeville, The Flying Karamazov Brothers, is in town.  Their return engagement of 4Play, an exploration of the rhythms shared by music, juggling and humor, is performed with the ensemble's trademark inspired lunacy and dazzling skill.  And with founder Paul Magid, the sole member of the original gang still performing, sharing the stage with the youthful trio of Stephen Bent, Mark Ettinger, and Rod Kimball, there is the added charm of seeing an older mentor passing on the traditions of his art to a new generation.
