OFF ASSIGNMENT Launches Online

Off Assignment, a magazine of literary travel writing, recently launched the first of its online content, answering the demand for authors to enhance their published work with compelling experiences and details left unsaid. Forged by today's top journalists, essayists, and travel writers, Off Assignment is a publication dedicated to candid storytelling. The magazine, which grew out of a grassroots series of live storytelling events featuring writers such as Gay Talese and Sloane Crosley, now publishes a weekly series called 'Letter to a Stranger,' short essays about memorable strangers from past journeys. In its first weeks, the series has featured contributors such as New York Times bestselling authors Leslie Jamison and Lauren Groff, as well as memoirist Howard Axelrod and National Book Award winner Julia Glass.

The fifth anniversary of the Brooklyn Book Festival will take place on Sunday, September 12, with an all-star literary lineup, including Salman Rushdie, Mary Gaitskill, Colson Whitehead, Paul Auster, Rosanne Cash, Paul Krugman, Gary Shteyngart, Francine Prose, Dennis Lehane, Jonathan Lethem, Pete Hamill, Jennifer Egan, Russell Banks, Michael Connelly, John Hodgman, Kristen Schaal, Thurston Moore, Sam Lipsyte, Sloane Crosley, Sandra Rodriguez and Paul Harding and many, many more, as well as Children's and Young Adult Lit stars like Rebecca Stead, Sara Shepard, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jon Scieszka. The Festival is a free, literary celebration featuring more than 200 national and international authors in readings and panel discussions. On Sunday, September 12, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Brooklyn Literary Council and Brooklyn Tourism will host the fifth annual Brooklyn Book Festival. Each year, the Brooklyn Book Festival 'BoBi' award is given to an author who has made a broad impact on the field of literature. This year's recipient is John Ashbery, who will be honored at the Brooklyn Book Festival Gala Mingle on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The award was established in the Festival's second year. Previous BoBi recipients are Edwidge Danticat (2009), Walter Mosley (2008) and Paul Auster (2007). Ashbery will also participate in this year's Festival program, in an on-stage conversation with Paul Auster, Sunday, September 12.
