BWW Review: OUT LOUD theatre offers edgy, gripping CREATION X

From the moment you enter the theater - through a narrow hallway lit an antiseptic white - you are plunged into an immersive and disorienting experience in OUT LOUD's new one-act, CREATION X. The one-hour show, an intense character study of a scientist and 'monster,' is by turns enigmatic, thought-provoking, and viscerally terrifying.
BWW Review: OUT LOUD Theatre's Haunting ESCAPE

ESCAPE, the second installment of OUT LOUD Theatre's sixth season, is a thoroughly original, thoroughly engrossing movement piece that brings the audience along on the varied journey of emotions surrounding the loss of a loved one. Have Kleenex at the ready.
BWW Review: Fully Immersive KING LEAR at OUT LOUD Theatre

OUT LOUD Theatre's production of KING LEAR is an incredibly ambitious undertaking both in terms of performance and also technical elements. The end result is a production that is almost overwhelming to take in, but that does an excellent job capturing the emotional drama of the play. Unfortunately, some plot points take a backseat to style in a way that doesn't quite work, but it's fair to say that this is unlike anything else that's out there right now.
BWW Review: Haunting THE YELLOW WALLPAPER at OUT LOUD Theatre

THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was published in 1892.  The first-person narrative takes the reader inside the mind of an unnamed woman suffering from postpartum depression, who has been prescribed “The Rest Cure”, which calls for her to be confined to a room, alone, to let her mind rest and heal itself.  The cure turns out to be worse than the disease, and the seemingly innocuous yellow wallpaper in the room where she lives starts to play tricks on her already fragile mind, eventually leading her into total madness.  The short story is all within the woman's mind, but in order to dramatize it, OUT LOUD Theatre has put The Woman center stage in a kind of freak show/mental hospital setting where the audience observes different aspects of her struggle for sanity.  Meticulous stage design and costumes managed to convey volumes of information and set the tone perfectly, and the wordless performances are powerful and haunting.

BWW Review: Out Loud Theatre Presents Unique, Fascinating Take on JANE EYRE

Adapting a work of literary fiction into a stage play is always tricky. Especially so if it's something extremely well-known and beloved, something that has stood the test of time, something considered a classic. The novels of the Bronte sisters have been the subject of adaptations many times over, in a variety of mediums and each one with its own strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures. Polly Teale's recent stage version of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre proves that an adaptation can breathe new, unique life into a well-known tale while honoring and maintaining the classic and beloved story.
