Simon Buttteriss

Simon was a chorister at Westminster Abbey, ran away to play the title role in the first West End revival of THE WINSLOW BOY, was a member of the National Youth Theatre and read English at Cambridge
Other West End Theatre includes SWEENEY TODD (Drury Lane), THE RELAPSE (Old Vic), CATS (New London), AN ITALIAN STRAW HAT (Shaftesbury), THE MIKADO (Savoy), THE WHITE GUARD and PETER PAN (RSC), seasons at the Donmar and Lyric Hammersmith and roles in nine new productions at ENO (London Coliseum), directed by Jonathan Miller, Richard Jones, Robert Carsen, Christopher Alden, La Fura Dels Baus and John Copley.
He played three seasons at Chichester in VALMOUTH, GOODBYE MR CHIPS, HENRY V, FORTY YEARS ON, DIVORCE ME, DARLING! and national tours include THE WINSLOW BOY, HAY FEVER, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CANDIDE, THE MIKADO, IOLANTHE, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. He has toured the USA, Australia and New Zealand in THE MIKADO and HMS PINAFORE and played in CANDIDE and MY FAIR LADY at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
Television credits include French and Saunders’ LET THEM EAT CAKE, two series of BY THE SWORD DIVIDED, STALKY AND CO, THE SILVER BUCKLE, GOODBYE MR CHIPS, SPITTING IMAGE, LONDON’S BURNING and he wrote and presented a five part series about Gilbert and Sullivan: A MOTLEY PAIR and the documentary dramas A GOOSEBERRY FOOL (about Oliver Goldsmith) and A SALARIED WIT (about George Grossmith), all regularly screened on Sky Arts 2.
Film credits include MIKE Leigh’s Oscar winning TOPSY-TURVY and he directed the TURANDOT sequences in the Warner Brothers movie CHASING LIBERTY.
On Radio 4, he has appeared in pieces by Tom Stoppard, Katherine Mansfield and Christopher Logue and he was a regular character in the series TAKING IT UP THE OCTAVE.
In regional theatre, he has played roles at Sheffield Crucible, Birmingham Rep, Bristol Old Vic, Salisbury Playhouse, The Watermill, Manchester Library.
He has become very much associated with the ‘patter’ roles in Gilbert and Sullivan, which he has performed at the Savoy Theatre, the BBC Proms and throughout the world. This has led to his being cast in comic roles at numerous opera houses including La Scala Milan, Paris Chatelet, Covent Garden, ENO, WNO, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Barcelona Liceu and Almeida and Aldeburgh Opera.
He has written and translated for stage and screen and has directed operettas for John Wilson and the Philharmonia Orchestra as well as for Raymond Gubbay and the G&S Opera Company, at the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall and on tour.
