Review: Kouyoumdjian-Vavrek ADORATION Is a Cautionary Tale at Prototype
Another year has come to an end for the Prototype Festival of new opera theatre-music theatre, under the banner of Beth Morrison Projects and HERE. For those of us who couldn’t make it to all the shows on display at various venues around town, it’s always something of a crapshoot: Which ones do you choose? This week, for me, it was the Mary Kouyoumdjian-Royce Vavrek ADORATION, based on the eponymous Atom Egoyan film.

THE BELLE'S STRATAGEM Opens at Cal State Fullerton This Month
Written in 1780, Hannah Cowley's rom-com romp is a witty parody that upends the conventional gender norms and marital expectations of eighteenth-century English society. The “belles” at the center of the play concoct two distinct stratagems, or ruses, to change the minds of the men in their lives and subvert the status quo.

BWW Review: REFUGE MALJA at Portland Stage Explores the Refugee Experience
In mounting Bess Welden's new play Refuge Malja, Portland Stage seeks to tell the story of contemporary Syrian war refugees in the context of history, the Holocaust, and personal conflict. Set largely in Greece and the Middle East, it intertwines the story of two journalists, their failed romance, and the struggles they have in coming to terms with past demons and the present suffering they witness. The intersection of these dramas is laden with potential for fine storytelling, but somehow Welden never manages to weave the threads into a coherent tale. Admirable in its intent, Refuge Malja remains a puzzling, under developed theatrical experience.
