Samuel Barnett is a British actor best known for his work on stage and screen. Born on April 25, 1980, in Whitby, North Yorkshire, Barnett grew up in London where he attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
Barnett made his Broadway debut in 2013 in the critically acclaimed production of "Twelfth Night" at the Belasco Theatre. In the production, which was directed by Tim Carroll, Barnett played the role of Viola/Cesario alongside Mark Rylance, Stephen Fry, and Paul Chahidi. The production received rave reviews and was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play.
Prior to his Broadway debut, Barnett had established himself as a talented stage actor in the UK. He made his West End debut in 2004 in the production of "The History Boys" at the National Theatre. In the production, which was directed by Nicholas Hytner, Barnett played the role of Posner alongside a talented cast that included James Corden, Dominic Cooper, and Richard Griffiths. The production was a huge success and went on to transfer to Broadway, where it won several Tony Awards, including Best Play.
Barnett continued to work in the theatre, appearing in productions such as "Dealer's Choice" at the Menier Chocolate Factory, "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Royal Opera House, and "The Beaux' Stratagem" at the National Theatre. In 2012, he starred in the production of "The Effect" at the National Theatre, which was directed by Rupert Goold. The production received critical acclaim and went on to transfer to the West End.
In addition to his work on stage, Barnett has also made a name for himself on screen. He is perhaps best known for his role as Dirk Gently in the BBC America series "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." The series, which was based on the novels by Douglas Adams, ran for two seasons and earned Barnett critical acclaim for his performance.
Barnett has also appeared in a number of other television shows and films, including "Penny Dreadful," "The History Boys," "Bright Star," and "Jupiter Ascending." He has also lent his voice to several audiobooks, including the popular "His Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman.
Most recently, Barnett starred in the West End production of "Kunene and the King" at the Ambassadors Theatre. The production, which was written by John Kani and directed by Janice Honeyman, tells the story of two men from different backgrounds who are brought together by fate. Barnett played the role of Jack Morris, a white South African actor who is hired to play King Lear opposite Kani's character, an aging black actor named Lunga Kunene. The production received critical acclaim and Barnett's performance was praised for its emotional depth and nuance.
