BWW Review: HUNDRED DAYS: Every Song Tells a Story

HUNDRED DAYS and the intimate Black Box at the Umbrella Stage Company in Concord are a perfect match, not unlike Abigail and Shaun Bengson, the couple whose true story of their romantic and musical journey is told in this original song cycle. Staged like a concert before a few cabaret-style tables and rows of stadium seating, with the band seated behind the vocalists and totally engaged, HUNDRED DAYS has elements of ONCE with everyone having a grand old time making music as the vehicle for their storytelling.
The Umbrella Stage Company to Present Regional Premiere Of HUNDRED DAYS

This January 24-February 16, The Umbrella Stage Company - Greater Boston's newest professional theater -- will present the regional premiere of the exhilarating folk-punk musical, Hundred Days, by The Bengsons with a book by Sarah Gancher, and directed by Brian Boruta.

BWW Review: WE WILL NOT BE SILENT: A Rallying Cry For The Resistance

New Repertory Theatre's mission is "to produce plays that speak powerfully to the vital ideas of our time," a statement which they adhere to vigorously. In this season, under the theme of "Awakening," New Rep presents the New England premiere of WE WILL NOT BE SILENT, a docudrama by playwright David Meyers. Based on true events, the play focuses on one young German woman's resistance to Hitler and the Nazi party, her determination to maintain her principles and integrity in the face of grueling interrogation, and the price of her righteousness. Under the direction of Artistic Director Jim Petosa, with ever-increasing tension and drama, Sarah Oakes Muirhead and Tim Spears give riveting performances as the detainee and the detective who holds her destiny in his hands.
BWW Review: DARK ROOM: World Premiere in Development at Bridge Repertory Theater

Olivia D'Ambrosio's vision for DARK ROOM is an artistic blend of spoken dialogue, choreographed movement, evocative sounds and music, and the best use of the architectural features of the space at the Multicultural Arts Center in East Cambridge. George Brant's play is inspired by the life, death, and photography of Francesca Woodman, and Bridge Rep employs a cast of 22 women to portray the subjects of Woodman's works.
BWW Review: IDEATION: Is It Only a Test?

New Repertory Theatre opens its season with IDEATION, the Boston-area premiere of Aaron Loeb's play that is equally thrilling and disturbing as we try to adapt to the rapidly changing normal in America. With an unpredictable neophyte at the helm of our ship of state, a legislative body in a perilous state of gridlock, and the 24-hour news cycle constantly bombarding us with information, our ability to separate fact from fallacy, as well as our resilience, is being tested. Loeb's characters find themselves in a high-stakes situation that may or may not be a test, and their capacity to work together is threatened by creeping doubt and mistrust.
BWW Review: New Rep's Prophetic Portraits Series: BRECHT ON BRECHT

BRECHT ON BRECHT is the second in New Rep's series of Prophetic Portraits, following Johnny Lee Davenport's acclaimed portrayal in last month's THURGOOD. Brecht's art focuses on his experiences in Berlin, his flight from Nazism, and his life as an expatriate in America, where he faced accusation by the House Un-American Activities Committee. The 90-minute show is a revue of words and music, arranged by George Tabori, with direction by Jim Petosa and music direction by Matthew Stern.
BWW Review: Johnny Lee Davenport Measures Up in THURGOOD

Johnny Lee Davenport and Director Benny Sato Ambush collaborate for a powerful production of George Stevens, Jr.'s THURGOOD in its area premiere at New Repertory Theatre in Watertown. Together, they create a humanized portrait of Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, that is at once relatable and larger-than-life. It is also a reminder that one man can make a difference if he is determined and perseveres.
BWW Review: THE LAUNCH PRIZE World Premiere at Bridge Rep

Bridge Repertory Theater of Boston presents the world premiere of local playwright MJ Halberstadt's THE LAUNCH PRIZE under the direction of Tiffany Nichole Greene. A quartet of visual arts graduate students anxiously awaits the announcement of the prize winner and their friendship is challenged by the competition. Over the course of eighty minutes, the foursome unleashes a virtual herd of elephants in the room as issues of race, gender, entitlement, and duplicity bubble up from deep wells of resentment.
BWW Review: There's Something About Mary

New Repertory Theatre continues its third annual Next Rep Black Box Festival with Colm Toibin's THE TESTAMENT OF MARY, a controversial one-woman play that reimagines the life and attitudes of Mary some twenty years after the crucifixion of her son. Artistic Director Jim Petosa directs Paula Langton in an impressive solo performance, with texture added by lighting designer Matthew Guminski and composer/sound designer Dewey Dellay.
BWW Review: VIA DOLOROSA: On the Road With David Hare

New Repertory Theatre's 3rd Annual Next Rep Black Box Festival presents British playwright David Hare's VIA DOLOROSA as the first of its three shows. Minimal design elements sharpen the focus on David Bryan Jackson's virtuoso performance as the author. Serving as an animated and amiable tour guide, Jackson is fully committed to connecting with the audience, ensuring that the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are understood and keenly felt.
BWW Reviews: Nancy E. Carroll is Worth the Journey to 4000 MILES at Gloucester Stage Company

Playwright Amy Herzog's 4000 MILES is a slice-of-life drama that observes a month in the relationship between a 91-year old grandmother (Nancy E. Carroll) and her 21-year old grandson Leo (Tom Rash) who drops in on her in the middle of the night at the end of a harrowing cross-country bicycle trip. The reason for the visit is a mystery, which is oh-so-gradually revealed, but the story doesn't cover much territory between point A and point B. Director Eric C. Engel grasps the timing necessary to bring out the play's humor and Carroll is a master of delivering a very funny line with a deadpan expression.
BWW Review: JACQUES BREL Comes Alive at Gloucester Stage Company

Good music stands the test of time and the Gloucester Stage Company celebrates its 35th Anniversary Season by revisiting one of their most requested productions. JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS still shows a lot of life more than 45 years since its off-Broadway debut. A quartet of polished actor-singers reveals the heart and soul in Brel's music and the brilliant complexity of his lyrics.
