2016 Roger Rees Awards Honor New York Students; Winners Announced!
The Broadway Education Alliance Inc. presented The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance (formerly the Gershwin Awards) on Sunday, May 22 at The Beacon School in Manhattan. The two-hour showcase hosted by Tim Federle (co-writer of Tuck Everlasting) featured 35 students who had played leading roles at 26 high school located throughout the five boroughs of New York, Long Island and Westchester.

The Broadway Education Alliance just presented The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance (formerly the Gershwin Awards), yesterday The Beacon High School in Manhattan. This annual talent showcase featured 44 students representing 26 New York City metro area high schools competing for the coveted title of Best Actress and Best Actor in a musical.

A step onto the stage, and the winds of our ancestors and the spirits of the racehorse seem
to jostle through the skirts and hair of Martita Goshen. Each hand gesture, every head flit
conjures up memories of native dances and old forgotten connections between horse and
man. This is Martita Goshen's Earthworks' performance of "Turning Home," a tribute to
American thoroughbred racehorses.

Martita Goshen's Earthworks - 9 dancers joined by female equestrian and jockey Janice Blake Baeza - will premiere her 'Turning Home,' a tribute in dance and film to the greatness and goodness of American thoroughbred racehorses Barbaro and the brilliant Ruffian, who both died tragically and too soon. The one-hour work has original music by Art Baron of the Duke's Men, and Grammy Award-winning cellist/composer David Darling, and video by Peter Richards. Three performances, tonight, April 18-20, at the Mark Morris Dance Center, 3 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn.

Broadway's landmark musical event THE LION KING recently welcomed to the company: GARETH SAXE as the evil and power-hungry lion Scar; ALTON FITZGERALD WHITE as Mufasa, the great lion warrior and ruler of the Pridelands; CAMERON POW as the prim and proper hornbilled bird Zazu; BEN JEFFREY as the carefree warthog Pumbaa; FRED BERMAN as the wisecracking meerkat Timon; and CHAUNTEÉ SCHULER as the loyal lioness Nala. Jeffrey, Berman and Schuler will mark their Broadway debut with The Lion King. Produced by Thomas Schumacher of Disney Theatrical Productions, THE LION KING is currently playing at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre (200 West 45th Street).
