Lighting Designer Clifton Taylor Wins Knight Of Illumination Award In U.K.

Acclaimed lighting designer Clifton Taylor has won a prestigious Knight of Illumination Award in the United Kingdom (KOI-UK). Taylor, whose work has been commissioned on Broadway, off-Broadway, regionally, and in 17 countries outside the United States, won for his design of 'Four Quartets,' based on the poem by T.S. Eliot, which was remounted at the Barbican Theatre in London.

The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus is thrilled to kick off the 50th anniversary season celebration for its beloved Resident Company, PHILADANCO, The Philadelphia Dance Company, with a presentation entitled GENESIS, followed by a star-studded, VIP reception honoring the legacy of PHILADANCO Founder & Artistic Director Joan Myers Brown, with proceeds from the event benefiting PHILADANCO. The reception will take place in the Academy of Music ballroom, home of PHILADANCO's first Gala in 1972. Reception attendees include former PHILADANCO dancer and former Tony Award-winning star of Hamilton Leslie Odom, Jr., who will perform at both the GENESIS performance on October 5 and at the reception. Both Odom, Jr. and Broadway & television star Sheryl Lee Ralph will serve as honorary co-chairs for the 50th anniversary year.

Mr. DeJesus has been the Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company since 1998, inheriting directorship of this nearly 45 years old company from Andy Torres during a time when the future was anything but certain. Having led a successful concert dance career - that saw him working with Eleo Pomare, Talley Beatty, Gary Deloatch, Martial Roumain and George Faison - Mr. DeJesus transitioned in to a highly successful theatre career with his stage debut at Shakespeare in the Park's production of 'Measure for Measure' under the direction of George C. Wolfe.

The interaction between Brown and her equally hardworking partner Catherine Foster portrayed a multidimensional mix of African-American culture and urban girlhood not often accessible to those without a similar background. There was a sense of sisterhood and innocence not often seen in mainstream portrayals of African American youth. However, the piece did not limit itself to depicting the idyllic.

Ormsby, Artistic Director of Toronto's KasheDance, and Christopher Walker, a Jamaican choreographer working out of the U.S.A., join forces for FACING Home: Love & Redemption, a powerful contemporary dance production that investigates the global impact of Bob Marley's music - its expression of humanity's struggle and its inspiration toward love, redemption and hope - and contrasts it to the active, deep-rooted homophobia in Jamaican/West Indian Culture. The Toronto premiere of this bold new work featuring eleven performers runs Today, November 26 to Sunday, November 29 at the Aki Studio Theatre in the Daniels Spectrum arts hub in the revitalizedRegent Park area of Toronto.
The two choreographers aim to engage communities in conversation about homophobia using movement, music and poetry to access ideas of liberation and highlight the blurred lines between love, survival and choice.
